Alliance Group

Alliance Group was established in 1948 and is based in Invercargill, New Zealand.

Alliance Group is one of the world's largest processors of sheepmeat. The group's nine processing plants are strategically located throughout the South Island and lower North Island. Approximately 7 million lambs, 1 million sheep, 150,000 cattle and 130,000 deer are processed annually.

The company is a farmer-owned co-operative with over 5,000 farmer-shareholders. More than 85% of the stock supplied to the company for processing comes from shareholders.

Alliance Group produces 30% of New Zealands sheepmeat production, 10% of its beef production and 20% of its venison production. Nearly all Alliance Group's sheepmeat production is exported, accounting for 15% of the world's cross-border sheepmeat trade.

From our offices in the United Kingdom, the Middle East and North America, we have forged strong links with leading retail chains. In other markets our extensive network of distributors and agencies supports our commitment to customer service.

By working closely with our customers, Alliance Group continues to strengthen and develop these relationships. We believe it is fundamental to our success, now and into the future.

Alliance Group was established in 1948 by a group of farmers who formed the company to process and market high quality meat and co-products to international markets.

From its origins in the 1940s, Alliance Group has become a world leader, with 5,500 staff and an annual turnover in excess of $NZ 1 billion.

1960 Alliance opened its first plant at Lorneville, near Invercargill, in the heart of Southland's farming community.
1980 Alliance becomes a co-operative company, wholly owned by the same farmers who supply its livestock.
1990 A new name - Alliance Group Limited - and further acquisition - Waitaki International Ltd. The total number of plants more than doubles to ten.
1991 Livestock numbers continue to decrease following the withdrawal of government farm support in the mid 1980's. Alliance Group responds by rationalising its plant operations.
1995-1999 A successful capital raising plan restructures the company and opens the door to new opportunities. An innovative new venture into venison processing is introduced with the development of specialist facilities.
2001 Approximately 7 million lamb, 1 million sheep, 140,000 cattle and 80,000 venison are processed annually, through seven plants strategically located throughout the South Island.
2003 Alliance Group expands into the North Island through the acquisition and redevelopment of the Dannevirke plant. This brings the total plants to eight.
2008 Alliance Group purchases the assets of Levin Meats. The new plant doubles Alliance Group's sheep and lamb capacity in the North Island as well as providing cattle processing facilities. The acquisition takes Alliance Group's total number of plants to nine.
